Formats

The Formats section defines the different publication formats used throughout your comic collection.

Each comic can be assigned a format, making it easy to distinguish between different types of releases and organize your collection more effectively.

Formats are managed centrally and can be selected whenever you create or edit a comic.

Creating a Format

When creating a new format, you can define:

  • Name
  • Description
  • Notes

Once saved, the format can be assigned to any number of comics.

Name

The Name describes the publication format of the comic.

Common examples include:

  • Single Issue
  • Comic Book
  • Softcover
  • Hardcover
  • Trade Paperback
  • Omnibus
  • Magazine
  • Digital
  • Annual
  • Special

Whenever possible, use consistent naming conventions to keep your filters and reports organized.

Description

Use the Description field to provide additional information about the format.

Examples include:

  • Publication type
  • Typical use
  • Special characteristics
  • Differences from similar formats

This field is optional.

Notes

The Notes field can be used to store additional information, such as:

  • Publisher-specific details
  • Personal comments
  • Usage guidelines

This field is also optional.

Assigning Formats

When creating or editing a comic, you can assign it a format.

This allows you to easily filter your collection by publication type, for example:

  • Single Issues
  • Collected Editions
  • Hardcover Editions
  • Digital Releases
  • Magazines

For larger collections, format metadata makes browsing and organization significantly easier.

Why Use Formats?

Managing formats centrally provides several advantages:

  • Consistent naming
  • No duplicate entries
  • Powerful search and filtering
  • Consistent metadata throughout your archive
  • Better statistics and reporting

New formats can be added at any time, allowing SCADA to adapt to virtually any type of comic collection.

Best Practice

Keep the number of formats as consistent as possible.

Instead of creating multiple variations such as HC, Hard Cover, and Hardcover, choose a single naming convention and use it consistently.

This keeps your database clean and ensures reliable filtering, searching, and reporting.

Summary

Formats provide a consistent way to classify comics by their publication type. By managing formats centrally, SCADA makes it easier to organize, search, filter, and analyze your collection—regardless of series or publisher.
